Boc added school inspectorates can ask the Education Ministry's approval until 4 p.m. Monday to further suspend classes on Tuesday, if the case may be.

Boc summoned the committee for emergency situations at 3 p.m. Sunday to discuss the situation of schools in areas under frosty weather advisory.

Earlier Sunday, Education Minister Daniel Funeriu decided schools in capital city Bucharest will be closed Monday due to frosty weather.

He added schools will first be closed for 24 hours and further decisions will be made depending on weather conditions.

Funeriu said he also talked to school inspectors in thirteen counties targeted by frosty weather advisory and asked them to convene with the local committees for emergency situations and decide whether or not to suspend classes on Monday.

Education Ministry spokesperson Melania Mandas Vergu said the ministry urged local officials in several counties affected by the cold weather to discuss the possibility of closing high schools too, if the case may be.

Meteorologists on Sunday extended the code orange weather advisory for heavy snowfall and blizzards in Bucharest and nine counties in southeastern Romania, Sunday afternoon through Monday evening.

Meteorologists expect mixed precipitation causing icy roads, followed by heavy snowfall and blizzards with winds reaching speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour and even exceeding 100 kilometers per hour in mountain areas.

Fifty-five people died of severe hypothermia in the second half of January when a cold Siberian front swept Europe and temperatures in Romania went as low as minus 34 degrees Celsius.
