The announcement was made by presidential education counsellor Ligia Deca, who said that the bill, in its current form, could have negative effects for pupils and the education system overall.

According to the bill, the median number of classes for common subjects would be set starting with the next school year at 20 per week for elementary school, 25 for middle school and 30 for high school.

“We consider that the legal interventions setting the number of classes allotted for subjects in the framework education plan, being incomplete in their regulations, are unclear, which calls for re-examination by the Parliament”, the counsellor said.

She added that President Iohannis was of the opinion that any such amendment to the number of classes should be made following an assessment of its impact on human resources in the education system.

The bill will be debated and voted again in the two chambers of the Parliament.
