Romania’s economic sentiment index edged slightly higher to 81.6 points in December, from 81.1 points in the previous month, mainly helped by advances in services and construction, a widely watched European Commission monthly survey showed Thursday.

In its latest business and consumer survey, the Commission said confidence in construction went to minus 33.8, from minus 36.4 points, while confidence in the services sector rose to minus 2, from minus 4.1.

Confidence in Romanian industry rose 0.9 points on the month, to minus 4.5, while confidence in the retail trade sector inched up in December to minus 7.8, from minus 8.1 in the previous month, the data showed.

However, consumer confidence declined, to minus 55.4, from minus 54.5 in November.

In the EU, economic sentiment increased 1 point, to 106.1 in December, maintaining the upward trend seen throughout the year's second half.

The eurozone economic sentiment indicator was up 1.1 points to 106.2 in December.
