Romanian Government To Decide On Legal Codes Adoption Wednesday

Flutur said Democratic Liberal (PDL) and Social Democratic (PSD) leaders have not discussed an exact date, but that the process is going ahead as scheduled. He also said that a debate on the codes is to take place Tuesday at the Palace of Parliament, which will be attended by Government officials, the presidents of the two Parliamentary sub-commissions which developed the codes and representatives of non-Government organizations.

Coalition leaders told MEDIAFAX that the date when the Government is to take responsibility for the Civil and Criminal Codes would be set in the Monday meeting, with Prime Minister Emil Boc likely to ask Parliament either Monday or Tuesday to set up the meeting for the procedure. The sources said PDL and PSD agreed in last week’s meeting on June 9 as the date, at least in principle.

On May 20, the Romanian Government decided to withdraw from the Parliament the initial draft Criminal and Civil Codes, in order to take responsibility for the new texts.

"The decision was to withdraw the initial draft Criminal and Civil Codes from the Parliament. The Secretariat General of the Government will send a letter to the Senate, requesting the withdrawal of these draft laws, those for which several NGOs filed memos. This was possible because these draft laws had not entered Parliament debate yet. Thus, the Codes debated in the two Parliament committees remain valid,” minister in charge with Parliament relations Victor Ponta said.

The Government announced it will take responsibility for the Criminal Code and Civil Code early June.
