Romania’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday found unconstitutional several articles of the law introducing the uninominal voting system, for which the government assumed responsibility in parliament.

Romanian Govt’s Uninominal Vote Sys Law Unconstitutional

Romanian President Traian Basescu raised an exception of unconstitutionality for the law, saying the government assumed responsibility for an incomplete normative act.
 
The article contested by the president introduced additional stipulated that "separately for the Chamber of Deputies and Senate, each political party, political alliance, electoral alliance or organization of national minorities, has the right to propose an addition national list to include a number of candidates equal or lower to the number of candidates in all uninominal colleges".
 
The motivation of the Court’s decision will be published in the Official Gazette and becomes final and mandatory. The parliament is obliged to reexamine the unconstitutional provisions and amend them in accordance with the Court’s decision within 45 days.
