Romanian PM Says Parliament’s Confidence Vote Is Necessary For Reform

Boc insisted in his speech before lawmakers on the country's need for these laws to be enacted using the fast track of a confidence vote.

"We have left the communist state behind, but today's state still inherits some of the old habits. The state has so far been working more toward its own benefit rather than the benefit of its citizens," the prime minister said.

He said the much disputed law on education includes the principles agreed with parliamentary parties and unions and needs to be promoted with a confidence vote because it takes a long time to prepare for the introduction of a new system.

The Romanian Government is asking the Parliament for a confidence vote Tuesday to enact a law on education, a law regulating wages across the public sector and a law on the reorganization of government agencies and state institutions to cut public spending.

The Government accepted slightly over 120 amendments to the three draft laws it wants enacted, less than 5% of the 2,680 amendments proposed by lawmakers.

Public sector employees in education, healthcare, law enforcement and public administration are picketing the Parliament and call on the Government not to enact the unitary pay law but renegotiate it and discard plans to cut jobs in the public sector.
