Romanian President Asks Parliament Consent To Keep Romanian Troops In Iraq In ‘09

In the letter addressed to the heads of the two chambers of Parliament, Basescu requires their consent to keep Romanian troops in Iraq in 2009, following the Iraqi government’s invitation to Romania to keep its troops there after Jan 1, 2009.
 
The head of state added the types of operations and activities to be attended by Romanian troops will be established together with the Iraqi government and funds needed for the missions are stipulated in the budget of the Ministry of Defense.
 
"Romania, following its undertaken commitments, will continue in 2009 to participate with troops in missions outside national borders in operation theaters in the Balkans and Afghanistan, within actions under the coordination of the United Nations, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe,” the letter said.
 
The letter will be analyzed in the standing offices of the two chambers of Parliament.
