Basescu also urged politicians to base their election campaigns on programs, policies and realistic solutions instead of idle promises.

"I will work with any government that is up to Romania’s challenges and does not serve oligarchic interests. (...) I will work with any government that uses economic growth to further invest in Romania, a government that is not ready to sacrifice the country’s general interests in favor of personal interests or those of some group,” Basescu said in his address to Parliament.

The president concluded by wishing lawmakers good luck in the upcoming general elections.

Romania will hold a general election on November 30 and the main contenders are expected to be the Liberal Party, part of the current minority government, the Democratic Liberal Party, formerly led by acting president Basescu, and the leftist social democrats.

Romania elects its lawmakers every four years, through direct vote and held its last general election on November 28, 2004, along with presidential elections. Under the Constitution, the head of state is elected every five years.
