Romanian Senate Tacitly OKs Ex Ministers Liability Amendment

The Romanian Senate approved tacitly a draft law initiated by social democrat Serban Nicolae according to which former ministers fall under the law of minister liability and the act also applies to criminal cases under investigation.

The legislative proposal amends Law no. 115/1999 regarding ministers’ liability and its enactment term expired Monday, therefore it was approved tacitly.

The amendment stipulates the law also applies to former government members and to criminal cases involving such officials that are under investigation, regardless of the stage of the probe.

The Senate is the first chamber notified and the final decision belongs to the Chamber of Deputies.

Law 115/1999 stipulates its provisions are applicable to government members who commit crimes during office.
