Senate Judicial Committee Rejects Civil Partnership Bills

According to LGBT rights group ACCEPT, ruling Social Democrat Party (PSD) senators present at the committee meeting voted against the initiative, while Serban Nicolae made ironic comments towards the group’s representative and the proposals.

The group also argued that a Constitutional Court decision in 2018, which forced Romanian authorities to recognize a same-sex marriage performed in Belgium involving one of its citizens, ensure the rights of LGBT couples in the country to form a family.

ACCEPT also said that it expects the two bills to be rejected when they will be voted in the Senate’s plenary next week.

Two representatives of groups who opposed the bills argued however that the Constitutional Court decision does not concern same-sex unions in Romania and that the EU could not impose such measures to a sovereign state.

They also argued that children in civil partnerships would not benefit from the same protection and rights as those from marriages.
