The new arena will have 32,000 seats, covered stands and will be, after the National Arena, the largest stadium in Romania. The investment is estimated at approximately 603 million lei, and the project is not designed exclusively for football, but also for organizing major sporting events and concerts.

The road to signing the contract was, however, a complicated one. The tender for the design and execution of the stadium was finalized by the National Investment Company, after several stages and appeals. The builder was appointed in March 2026.

Timișoara, among the four stadiums unlocked by the Government

„Dan Păltinișanu” is part of a group of four major sports infrastructure projects for which the Government decided, on August 14, to allow the conclusion of design and execution contracts, after the procurement procedures had already been completed.

Also on the list is the Youth Stadium in Brașov; the new sports complex in Oradea; the Sports Complex – Municipal Stadium „1 Mai” in Slatina.

The cumulative value of the four investments is approximately 1.4 billion lei, while the state budget for 2026 provided for commitment credits of approximately 1.82 billion lei for these projects.

According to the Government, 25% of the costs of the works must be borne by local authorities, while 75% would be provided from the state budget starting January 1, 2028. Thus, the projects can advance in the period 2026-2027 within the limit of the money made available by local beneficiaries.

In the case of Timișoara, according to Simonis, „The Timiș County Council can provide, for the period 2026-2027, at least 125 million lei for the works on the new stadium”. The difference up to the total value of the project would be covered later by CNI financing.

Basically, the recent Government decision allowed the unblocking of some projects that already had the technical and economic indicators approved and the procurement procedures completed. The Executive justified the solution by the need for a phased implementation, depending on the available budgetary resources.

For Timișoara, the next step is the implementation of the technical project. After the completion of this stage, the construction of the new arena that will replace the old „Dan Păltinișanu”, a stadium demolished in 2025, can actually begin.
