Transparency International: Romanian Anticorruption Measures Are Insufficient

"Transparency International formulated a series of measures to be included in the Government agenda, in view of reducing the risk of corruption in the public sector, mostly in the vulnerable areas.

The recommendations are structured on five major areas of intervention – Justice, Public Administration, Public Procurement, decision transparency and the institutional capacity of anticorruption agencies – and are aimed at filling the gaps over the next Government’s mandate through concrete and viable measures," said a letter sent by TI Romania to the Parliament parties.

The leader of Transparency International Romania, Victor Alistar, said Tuesday in a press conference that the reason for which the NGO formulated the proposition is the fact that, analyzing political parties’ governing agendas, experts noted that anticorruption measures are insufficient.

In these conditions, Transparency International formulated the recommendations, sent them to parties, and is now expecting the reactions of the politicians before the new Parliament meets in session for the first time, to see if they are willing to introduce the measures proposed in their agendas.

Transparency International Romania added the fight against corruption is no longer treated in 2008 with the same priority as it was four years ago and draws attention on the importance of a clean public environment.

"Given Romania’s role as member of the European Union, the fight against corruption is no longer an internal affair, but one of the entire European Community. The success or failure of the new Government regarding anticorruption efforts will have an impact on the entire European Community," said Transparency International Romania in the letter sent to parties.
