Romanian Danube Segment Expects High Water Levels For Next 3 Weeks

Danube flow volume rates at the Romanian-Serbian border have decreased, but the downstream Iron Gates segments have posted a slight increase. ANAR experts announced that the water levels have exceeded the danger mark at eight monitoring stations and went over the flood mark at six other stations.

Estimates released Saturday by Romania's National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management, or INHGA, say that the Danube will attain very high levels and flow volume rates on the eastern Romanian segment of Braila-Galati Thursday. These levels will be maintained for at least three weeks.

The water management authority is now attempting to consolidate dams on the Danube on the Fetesti-Braila-Galati, Tulcea and Danube Delta sectors. Water levels in the eastern monitoring stations of Braila and Fetesti currently exceed the historic rates attained in 2006.

A dam on one of the Danube river's arms in Ialomita county, southern Romania, was damaged Wednesday due to the increased water level, and the overflows submerged several hectares of farmland.
