Romanian Teachers Threaten To Protest On First Day Of School

Romania’s National Education Federation (FEN) threatens to organize protests on the first day of school unless lawmakers take into consideration a draft law stipulating a 50% increase in teachers’ wages, according to a statement signed by the head of the federation, Dragos Neacsu.

FEN asked Monday the head of the Chamber of Deputies, Bogdan Olteanu, to include immediately on the chamber’s agenda the draft law stipulating wage increases for staff in the education system.

If the Chamber of Deputies does not meet the requests made by FEN, unionists are intent on starting protests as of the first day of the new school year, according to the statement.

If lawmakers block the draft law, FEN members warn they would go on general strike.

"Members of the National Education Federation will resort to any form of protest, a general strike, if the 50% increase is not effective as of October 1,” the statement read.
