Romanian Education Min Proposes The Construction Of “University Towns”

The Romanian government approved the proposition issued by the education minister for the creation of an interministerial committee that would analyze the unfolding of a project aiming to build university campuses outside major cities.

The new campuses could be built outside Bucharest and other university centers, said government spokesperson Camelia Spataru.

”There have been similar projects for many years in Europe and the USA. Following these examples, the campuses are planned as small cities, with their own medical, cultural and sports centers as well as other services necessary for a community,” Spataru said.

For Bucharest, there is already a blueprint of a project for a “university town” with a surface of 600 hectares and a hosting capacity of 100,000 students, which could be placed 10-15 km outside Bucharest and would reunite several Bucharest universities. The Project for the University of the Future could be completed in 6-10 years, and the costs would reach over EUR2 billion.

Romanian higher education currently includes 644,721 students, almost four times the number registered in 1989, while seats in amphitheaters, classrooms, laboratories or dormitories have not been supplemented by more than 15% compared to 1989.
