The motion needed at least 100 votes to pass, and 198 lawmakers were present. Social democrats and conservatives abstained, while the Hungarian minority party, which is part of the government, voted against the motion.

The Chamber adopted Tuesday a simple motion on education submitted by social democrats, Romania’s main opposition party and the largest group in parliament.

The social democrats’ motion was adopted 141 to 68 votes, of democrat liberals, the far-right Greater Romania Party (PRM) and the Conservative Party (PC).

The motion adopted Tuesday targets the dismissal of education minister Cristian Adomnitei and state secretary Svetlana Preoteasa, as well as a 50% increase in teachers’ wages.
