Romanian New Labor Minister: Welfare Bill A Priority, Must Be Adopted As Soon As Possible

Romanian democrat liberal Sulfina Barbu, whose appointment as labor minister was endorsed by President Traian Basescu on Friday evening, said one of her priorities is the welfare bill, which must be adopted by the Parliament as soon as possible.

Barbu said she will offer further details regarding her priorities as new labor minister after she is sworn in.

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc on Friday sent the head of state a request to dismiss Sebastian Lazaroiu from the position of Labor Minister and appoint Sulfina Barbu to replace him.

Later Friday, Basescu signed the decrees dismissing Lazaroiu and appointing Barbu as minister. She will be sworn in on Monday, September 19, after the decrees are published in the Official Journal.

The Romanian Senate on Wednesday postponed debates on the welfare bill put forward by the Labor Ministry. It will debate the draft normative act on Monday.
