Italian daily La Republicca cited Maroni as saying that the Romanian president did not object to the measures taken by the Italian Government towards Roma camps and deemed “ungrounded” the Romanian prime minister’s objections.
“We had an open talk. He made several recommendations which will be taken into account. He made no objections to the position we want to adopt in the future. All will be enforced according to Italian and International regulations to do away with indecency in Roma camps. We want to ensure the rights of Roma underage population, regardless of all these offensive and false controversies,” the paper quoted Maroni as saying.
“I’ve never met Maroni, I’ve never talked to him and I assumed the journalist who wrote that article made some confusion,” Basescu said.
