Romanian Pres Delivers Lofty Speech For Hungarians In Romania

In his speech, Basescu stressed that Romania is “country for all citizens regardless of ethnicity,” therefore, Hungarians living here should also be proud of their Romanian citizenship.

According to Basescu, the fact that Romania and Hungary are part of the same large European family and share the same goals targeting modernization and prosperity, has gradually enabled Hungarians to ''assume a double identity and pride, of being both Hungarian and Romanian citizens, easier than ever.”

Moreover, the head of state said Hungarians have proved throughout the years that they really love freedom and pointed out they have every reason to be proud, given that Hungary boasts many personalities with outstanding scientific and cultural achievements.

''May Hungarians in Romania live happily alongside all Romanian citizens,” Basescu concluded his speech.

Hungarian president Laszlo Solyom was planning to leave for Transylvania, central Romania, after the official ceremonies of the Hungarian national holiday on Sunday, but changed the date of his planned festive visit to Romania on Sunday afternoon for Saturday afternoon because the Romanian Air Authorities withdrew the prior authorized landing permission at Targu Mures, in the center of Transylvania.

Romanian authorities recently advised Solyom that his visit would not be well-timed, given his intention to support territorial self-determination.

Solyom's office said the President, in agreement with the Hungarian government, is convinced that visits to neighboring countries contribute to enhancing trust between neighbors and fighting prejudice.
