Police are searching several company headquarters in Bihor County in a complex case of tax evasion and embezzlement. The damage is related to illegal state aid amounting to approximately €400 million.

Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc has asked the ministers of Finance and of the Interior to take action against tax evasion, focusing on "high evasion," as well as step up controls using teams made up of representatives of every relevant institution.

The main factor permitting tax evasion is not incomplete legislation, but failure to apply the law, aided by certain bodies which should oversee the payment of budgetary obligations, Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said on Monday.

The value of losses caused to the Romanian state in June through cereal trade reached 75 million lei (EUR1=RON4.2036), according to Financial Guard official Sorin Florea, who added some 75-80% of employees will be involved in inspections to diminish tax evasion on this segment.

The Romanian Supreme Court allowed the request for the suspension of the case Loteria I, where businessman George Copos is on trial for tax evasion, and sent the case to the Constitutional Court, as lawyers raised an exception on jurisdiction should the defendant change status.
