Romania’s New Health Minister Pledges To Continue Healthcare Reforms

Former Health Minister Attila Cseke, who resigned early this month over budget disputes, highlighted reforms must continue and must go hand in hand with ensuring proper financing.

Ritli said the fact the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) will be coordinated by the Health Ministry will trigger a more efficient public money spending.

"The healthcare system must be rendered efficient. Healthcare programs, hospital management, the implementation of a claw-back system will bring the system more money," said Ritli.

He said a way of cutting costs would be to relieve hospitals of duties that can be solved by family doctors. He stressed that a good cooperation between CNAS and the ministry could also solve many of the problems the Romanian healthcare system is currently facing.

Ritli was sworn in as health minister at the Presidential Palace Wednesday evening, after President Traian Basescu signed the decree appointing him in the new position.

Ritli is a specialist in pediatric oncology and hematology, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in the University of Oradea. Since 2010, he is the medical director of the "Dr. Gavril Curteanu" City Hospital in Oradea.
