Romania Did Send Weapons To Georgia – Foreign Ministry

Romania did deliver weapons and ammunition to government authorities in Georgia, under the Charter of the United Nations, the international weapon export control regime and the EU code on weapon exports, the Romanian Foreign Ministry said Friday at the request of MEDIAFAX.

The Foreign Ministry said exports were made based on individual licenses, observing standards of the national weapon export control regime and Romania’s international commitments.

Georgia is not subject to any international or regional embargo, or any other restriction regarding weapon transfers, the Foreign Ministry added.

Abkhaz president Sergey Bagapsh said Thursday that large quantities of weapons made in Romania and the U.S. were found in Georgian military deposits in Kodori Gorge, according to the Caucasian Knot, a website founded by the Russian association Memorial.

Asked to comment, Romanian defense minister Teodor Melescanu said Romania did not export weapons to Georgia, but there will be check-ups to see whether any such exports were made using intermediaries.
