Mitrea Remains Firm On Resigning From Romanian Parliament

Romania’s former transport minister Miron Mitrea on Wednesday said he will not reconsider his decision to step down from his position of Member of Parliament, but that he will return to the political scene once prosecutors complete a probe against him.

“I didn’t change my mind. No way. I am one of those people who do not change their mind. As the Germans say: “One man, one word.” It was the only honorable solution for this situation. For me, this is a matter of honor, and not a legal one,” Mitrea said.

Mitrea said he decided to give up his MP seat and let the justice system follow its course.

In August, Romania’s parliament rejected a request from prosecutors to investigate corruption allegations against Mitrea and former prime minister Adrian Nastase.

Prosecutors have charged Mitrea with bribery and illegally receiving building materials for two properties when he was a minister from 2001 to 2004.
