During Saturday’s meeting of the communal associations in Neptun, southeastern Romania, Basescu admitted the existence of a wage problem in the local administration.
He said that there are discrepancies between the wages of the elected representatives, and the wages of the appointed representatives.
“It’s outrageous that the mayor of a commune has half the salary of the chief of the rural police in the respective commune, and a judge with five years experience in the job has a salary five times higher than the head of state,” Basescu said.
He promised participants he would strive to increase the wages of the mayors, as they are the ones dealing with the problems of the community they are serving.
In this context, Basescu wanted to give an example of how ministers appointed in Bucharest do not get involved in the community problems, unlike mayors.
“Recently I observed an idiotic attitude of a minister. While the counties were under water and the mayors were doing everything possible to ensure people’s safety, an idiotic minister settled in a commandment would ask the mayors to come to him,” Basescu said.
“You might be surprised to see that the minister will reply to this without knowing I haven’t mentioned his name,” Basescu told journalists.
