APIA: Car Sales in Romania Grow 21% on Year in January

Car sales in Romania grew 21.6% in January compared with January 2018, while new car registrations declined 4.6% in the EU, data from the Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA) showed Monday.

All EU countries posted declines in car sale sin January except Romania and Lithuania. The five largest markets in the EU posted declines: France dropped 1.1%, Germany dropped 1.4%, Italy dropped 7.5%, Spain dropped 8 and the UK dropped 1.6%.

Growth in Romania was mainly driven by sales to companies, accounting for 65% of total sales in January, while sales to individuals grew grew 77% compared with January 2018, to 3,057 units, accounting for 35% of total sales from 24% in January 2018.

Second-hand car registrations in Romania declined 8% on the year in January, to 36,126 units, the data showed.

Ford Romania's output decreased 9.2% on year in January, to 8,491 units.

January vehicle sales stood at 11,014 units (+21.6%), of which 8,832 passenger cars (+23.3%) and 2,182 commercial vehicles (+15.3%).

In terms of brands for both cars and commercial vehicles, the ranking is led by Dacia with 2,693 units, followed by Ford with 1,198 units, and Volkswagen with 992 units.

For cars only, the ranking is led by Dacia with 2,440 units (27.6% market shares and +42.3% volume growth compared with January 2018), followed by Ford with 926 units (10.5% market share, 66.3% growth in volume), Volkswagen with 880 units (10% market shares, 7.3% growth), Skoda with 777 units (8.8% market share, 2 growth), and Renault with 559 units (6.3% market share, 33.1% growth).

Sales of locally made cars grew 49.5% in January compared with January 2018, whiles sales if imported cars grew 15.7%, the data showed.
