Bulgaria Says Detonators Stolen In Romania Were Not For Bulgarian Army

The ministry said in a press release the National Coordination Center for Logistics Support has no information of any ammunition shipment bound for the Bulgarian Army.

Four containers holding 16 detonators each were stolen Saturday afternoon from a freight train heading to Bulgaria.

People close to the matter said Sunday the fuses were produced at a weapon factory in Zarnesti and were exported to Bulgaria. The private ammunition transport was watched over by gendarmes.

According to the sources, the train made three stops on its route to Bulgaria and railway company CFR employees in Giurgiu, close to the Bulgarian border, alerted authorities after they noticed the seal of a car was broken.

Interior Ministry spokesman Marius Militaru told a news conference Sunday the 64 detonators were not assembled and are not dangerous.

The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a press release that ensuring the security of the intra-community freight transport was not the responsibility of the ministry or the Department for Export Control.

Military prosecutors have started investigations in this case.

The train is currently stationed at the Giurgiu North railway terminal and the area is guarded by gendarmes.
