Medical sources told MEDIAFAX that the businessman was pronounced dead on Sunday evening, around 22.00 local time.

The 56-year old businessman was rushed to the hospital last Thursday after suffering a stroke.

Florian Walter owned a significant stake in sanitation company Romprest, with his firms involved in numerous dealings with the Romanian state over the years. His businesses also brought him into the attention of anticorruption prosecutors, who investigated him several times for suspected corruption offences.

Walter was also heavily involved with Romanian football, having previously financed top flight clubs such as Dinamo Bucharest, Petrolul Ploiesti and Universitatea Cluj.
