About 12,000 Romanian nationals arrested abroad are expected to be transferred in Romanian prisons starting 2012, Romania’s penitentiary administration general manager Ioan Bala said Monday, citing a European provision.

Romania Expects Prison Transfer Of Some 12,000 Nationals As Of 2012

Bala told a news conference at a Christian center, which hosts former convicts and is working to re-include them in society, that a European provision states people convicted of crimes in other countries than their country of origin would be returned to save their sentence in their own country as of 2012.

"Based on the European recommendation, we expect the transfer of about 12,000 Romanian nationals arrestee abroad," Balasa said, adding Romania has citizens arrested nearly everywhere in the EU and about 1,200 in non-EU countries.
