Nica summoned the committee Monday to establish measures to be imposed to prevent the swine flu virus, which has already been confirmed in Europe, from reaching and spreading in Romania.

The minister said after the meeting that all the measures proposed by the Health Ministry have already been taken starting Monday morning.

"The situation in Romania isn’t dangerous. We have a plan of action and we are checking all border crossing points for swine imports and we are running a public information campaign,” Nica said adding Romania hasn’t imported any pigs from Mexico.

Health minister Ion Bazac said Romania hasn’t reported any cases of swine flu and all institutions must observe the EU’s epidemiological plan. He added emergency rooms are ready to deal with potential cases.

The swine flu symptoms are similar to common influenza, namely, high temperature, sore throat, coughing and fever, which can lead to pneumonia in only two to three days.

More than 100 people in Mexico are believed to have died from the new flu and more than 1,600 sickened, prompting widespread school closures and other measures.

The United States declared a swine flu outbreak a public health emergency as officials confirmed 20 cases in five US states and warned that they expected more in the coming days.

Suspected swine flu cases were being tested in Europe, the Middle East and Asia, after the new strain gain attention out of Mexico last week.

Health officials in Canada have reported a total of six confirmed cases of the potentially deadly virus.

The World Health Organization Director-General Margaret Chan on Sunday said the outbreak had "pandemic potential" and held teleconferences with staff and flu experts around the world, urging governments to step up their surveillance of suspicious outbreaks.

Spain’s health minister Trinidad Jimenez said Monday a first case of swine flu was reported and the patient is a man who recently traveled to Mexico.
