Romanian Lawmakers Allow Prosecution Of Ex PM

The Romanian Chamber of Deputies approved Wednesday with 158 pros and 128 cons the request issued by the Prosecutor General of Romania to start prosecuting lawmaker and former prime minister Adrian Nastase, in the corruption cases "Matusa Tamara" and "Zambaccian 2".

According to the Rules of the Chamber and to the Constitution, prosecution is allowed following the approval of a majority of voters present.

The meeting was attended by 288 of the 334 lawmakers.

Nastase urged fellow deputies Wednesday to approve requests for his prosecution on charges of corruption.

Nastase said he asked lawmakers to approve prosecutors’ requests and let justice take its course because he doesn’t want people to say his corruption files impede a good collaboration within the governing coalition formed of democrat liberals and social democrats.

He added he doesn’t want his case to be used as an excuse for the government and the head of state to not do their work.
