The new wage law eliminates the holiday and yearly bonuses, which together make up 17% of a police employee's monthly income. The new law does stipulate a 15% wage raise, meaning the net change will be a 4.5% reduction, said Lincu.

The union leader said the new law will increase salaries in police departments, but "far from fair given the dangerous work, added incompatibilities, restricted rights and importance of their job." Still, the chapter of the public sector wage law that clarifies incompatibilities and police employee's right to take up a second job is to the unionists' satisfaction.

Romania's Government Thursday sent the unitary wage bill to Parliament and asked legislators to set a calendar for the Government to adopt it through a confidence vote.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Emil Boc said wages in the public sector are to increase 15% next year and the minimum wage would be increased to 670 lei (EUR1=RON4.3137) from the current RON600.

Military personnel, police officers and prison employees with special status will receive increased wages, so that the higher level of contributions to the social security system, set through the public pension bill, should not lead to a lower or higher net monthly income for such public servants.

Romanian state workers won't get incentives, meal, gift or vacation vouchers next year either and overtime will be rewarded with days off instead of extra pay, according to the bill.
