Romanian President Would Prefer A Semi-presidential Regime

During the presentation of the report drawn up by the presidential commission for the analysis of the political and constitutional regime, Basescu presented ten options of his own for the revision of the country’s fundamental law.

He said the best political solution for Romania would be a semi-presidential regime.

The head of state added the country doesn’t need a Presidential regime, in which the president is also head of the government, nor a parliamentary regime, where the head of state is appointed by Parliament, because this option would leave out popular will.

Basescu said he thinks Romanians would prefer to keep electing their president by direct, popular vote.
