Romanian Subway Unionists To Shorten Tuesday’s Strike By Four Hours

Bucharest subway unionists’ strike, due to take place Tuesday between 4 a.m. and 4 p.m., was shortened so that subway will not operate between 4 a.m. and noon, the subway union said in a press release Monday.

According to the press release, the decision to cut the strike short was taken at the request of a foundation which is organizing charity events on June 1 to raise funds for the construction of a children's hospital.

Subway union leader Ioan Radoi announced Friday that subway and public transport unionists will go on strike on June 1, between 4 a.m. and 4 p.m., in solidarity with other public sector employees.

Hundreds of thousands of Romanian state employees, including teachers, doctors, police and public servants across the country are on full-blown strike Monday, in protest to the Government's spending cut plan which lowers their wages by one fourth.

Romania's Government Sunday evening adopted two draft laws that make up its austerity plan and plans to seek a confidence vote in Parliament to pass them into laws.

Romania, which has been hit by the deepest recession in at least 20 years, has pledged to bring the budget deficit to 6.8% of gross domestic product under the terms of a EUR20 billion IMF-led rescue loan agreed last year.
