Wage Hike Issue Sparks Clash Btw Romanian Politicians

According to Funar, the no-confidence motion will be submitted if the government proves incapable to financially back the 50% wage hike in the education system, as well as wage increases for other categories of state employees.

"In January 2008, the government came up with emergency ordinance no. 15 stipulating wage hikes in the education system. The ordinance was debated in Parliament as draft law and the lawmakers brought certain amendments to the wage hike percentage and decided the teaching staff would see a 50% wage hike," Funar said.

Funar pointed out that PRM backs the 50% wage hike in the education system, as well as wage increases for other categories of state employees, namely, public servants, doctors, adding it also backs students in their attempt to obtain higher scholarships.

Funar also said the government can get the money needed for wage increases if it terminates the privatization contract of oil company Petrom, which, he said, could bring EUR10 billion to the state budget, brings amendments to article 216 of the Fiscal Code, which stipulates any company operating natural gas and oil exports is exempted from taxes, withdraws Romanian troops from Iraq, which would bring USD500 million to the state budget, and urges U.S. military bases in Romania to pay rent.

The Romanian Chamber of Deputies Tuesday approved unanimously Ordinance 15/2008 amended by the leftist opposition Social Democratic Party stipulating a 50% wage increase for staff in the education system.
