Romanians spent less on gambling and other recreational activities in the first half of 2026. Revenue in this sector fell by 16% from January through June, compared to the same period last year.

The decline in gambling is the largest among the main categories of market services provided to the population analyzed by the NIS.

Overall, the volume of revenue from market services provided to the public fell by 9.1% in the first six months of the year, on a gross basis.

A significant decline was also recorded in the hotel and restaurant sector, where revenue fell by 12% in the first six months compared to the same period in 2025.

Hairdressing services and other beauty services recorded a 13.9% decline, while laundry and dry-cleaning services fell by 1.2%.

However, there is one sector that has shown strong growth.

Travel agencies and tour operators recorded a 17.4% increase in revenue during the first six months of the year.

NIS data for June shows that the downward trend continued.

Compared to June 2025, revenue from gambling and other recreational activities fell by 17%, the largest decline among the categories analyzed.

Across all market services provided to the public, revenue in June was 9.3% lower than in the same month last year.
