Bucharest Public Transport Unionists To Announce Decision Regarding Strike Thursday – Union Leader

Petrariu said that neither subway employees, nor above-ground transport authority RATB employees have decided whether to go on strike yet, and they have not set a date for the protest. He added that if RATB unionists are not affected by the upcoming wage cuts, they will stage a one-day solidarity strike on June 1, in support of those affected, whose strike is scheduled for May 31. According to Petrariu, if public transport wages are slashed as well, the unionists might halt work indefinitely.

Of RATB's 11,000 employees, some 4,000 are represented by Petrariu

Petrariu stressed that no decisions have been made yet, but that both subway unionists and RATB unionists would announce their plans Thursday.

Petrariu said Friday that his union would take a decision regarding the strike Wednesday.

Ion Popescu, president of the Meridian union federation, said Thursday, after talks with the Government, that railway unionists will halt trains and go on general strike starting May 31, in protest to the Executive's plan to cut wages by 25%. He added that subway and public transport employees are considering the same course of action.

Romania's public administration unionists might not join the May 31 strike either, as they might cease work on the day the no-confidence motion is debated, or on the day the Government seeks a confidence vote in Parliament, "Sed Lex" union alliance leader Vasile Marica said Monday.

Marica said that, pending the date the Government seeks the confidence vote in Parliament, the strike will either take place on May 31, or three days later, on Monday.

Social democrat lawmakers and union representatives have agreed to synchronize the parliamentary debate schedule with the upcoming social protests, social democrat leader Victor Ponta said Friday. According to Ponta, the social democrats support the unions' stance against the recently announced public sector expenditure cuts.
