Final Results: Independent Sorin Oprescu Is New Bucharest Mayor

The Bucharest Electoral Office (BEM) announced Tuesday that independent Sorin Oprescu won the race for Bucharest mayoralty with 56.55% of the votes against 43.45% gained by democrat–liberal rival Vasile Blaga.

BEM president Ileana Danaila said they counted the votes cast at 1,181 polling stations across Bucharest, adding all minutes are to be validated today and submitted to the Central Electoral Office (BEC).

Danaila said they will most likely notify the Bucharest Court Wednesday to validate Oprescu’s mandate of mayor.

Capital city Bucharest registered a 31.49% voter turnout in the second round of local polls.
