Government Announces Inspection At Oltenia Energy Complex Amid Miner Strike

Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila ordered on Thursday an inspection at the Oltenia Energy Complex (CE Oltenia), in the context of a miner strike which led to the shutdown of one thermal power unit, meant to check whether management respected regulations on corporate governance.

The inspections will verify the manner in which wage rights were set and granted for employees, but also the status of health and work safety regulations, how mineral resources were exploited and supply building, as well as the implementation of yearly investment and development programs, according to a Government statement.

The checks will be carried out by the prime minister’s supervisory body.

Romania is currently importing over 1,400 MW, the equivalent of its nuclear power plant output, due to the shutdown of one thermal power unit amid a coal miners' strike.

Miner strikes started last week due to the discontent with the institution’s announced budget for 2019, which froze worker salaries and cut benefits such as vacation vouchers. The movement quickly engulfed all CE Oltenia quarries by Monday, with thousands of employees refusing to work until the situation is clarified. Five protesters also went on hunger strike on Tuesday afternoon.
