"The Gilau-Mihaiesti section will be put up for auction immediately and a new design will be drafted to auction off the Targu Mures-Campia Turzii section. The rest, from Brasov to Targu Mures, might be built through public-private partnership - it is one solution we are considering for their completion, since public funds are not infinite," said Boc on public radio.

The cost of the Transylvania Highway will be reduced by about 50% to EUR6.9 million per km and U.S. constructor Bechtel will only work on two sections, Transport Minister Anca Boagiu announced Wednesday.

The state is free to auction off the other six sections, with a total length of 297 km, where work has not started: Brasov-Fagaras (53 km), Fagaras-Sighişoara (52 km), Sighisoara-Ogra (56 km), Ogra-Campia Turzii (36 km), Cluj Vest-Mihailesti (24 km) şi Mihailesti-Suplacu de Barcau (76 km).

The construction of the Transylvania Highway, which links central Brasov to western Bors on the Hungarian border, began in 2004 with a EUR2.2 billion contract awarded to Bechtel. The highway is designed to be 415 kilometers long, but only 52 kilometers have been built so far.
