Romania Needs Territorial Reorganization But Not On Ethnic Criteria – PM

Romania’s administrative and territorial reorganization is necessary, considering the eight development regions no longer meet necessities, and the reorganization must be in line with the Constitution, Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said Thursday during a seminar on territorial reorganization.

Boc said the country's future administrative and territorial reorganization must observe the Fundamental law and must not entail dividing the country into lands or other independent ethnic structures.

The prime minister stressed that Romanian authorities must ensure a functional administrative and territorial organization to meet EU requirements. Boc highlighted Romania is a unitary national state and cannot be reorganized as a federative state.

The prime minister said the future regions Romania will be divided into will be administrative and territorial units, but not on ethnic criteria.

According to Boc, a future territorial reorganization of the country can be made by revising the Constitution, adding the process entails the agreement of all political parties. The prime minister said such a course of action needs time to be completed and highlighted that, in the meantime, the Government will continue the state institution decentralization process.
