The restructuring plan approved in 2008 the layoff of 119 employees, but the board decided to give up the plan on higher demand planned for 2009.

Representatives of UM Cugir said they might need more employees as the company has contracts and large orders, and they might have to higher people on limited periods.

The mechanical plant said in October this year it wants to lay off only 30 employees of the number it initially planned, namely 119, who would have received severance pay.

The general manager of UM Cugir, Romulus Micu, said then that personnel cutbacks are part of a restructuring program in the weapon industry, approved by the national defense industry producer Romarm in the beginning of the year, but the number of the people sacked would not be that great as estimated.

The plant in Cugir was set up 200 years ago, and was until 1989 one of the most important companies in Alba county.

The plant used to be divided in two sections: one which produced household appliances and one which produced weapons and ammunition. After the 1989 anti-communist revolution, the company dealt with a series of economic problems and had to reduce activity and personnel.

Currently, the mechanical plant in Cugir has less than 1,000 employees of the 18,000 it had before 1989.
