Romania’s Presence In Operation Theaters To Lower To 1,667 Troops After Iraq Pullout

The number of Romanian troops in operation theaters abroad will be of 1,667 in 2010 following the pullout of troops from Iraq, Romanian President Traian Basescu said Tuesday after a meeting of the county’s Supreme Defense Council.

This year, Romania has 2,067 troops in operation theaters in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Romania’s participation in operation theaters will be reduced from 2,067 in 2009 to 1,667 in 2010," Basescu said.

The president added that 20 Romanian troops will remain in Iraq from 520, to train the Iraqi army within NATO.

Basescu also said the number of troops in the country that can be deployed in operation theaters in case of emergency increases by 642.

The head of state also said Romania will send 108 additional troops to Zabul, in Afghanistan.
