Diaconescu said that, in the entire European Union, there is no precedent “of such severity” as the situation that lead to the death of Romanian citizen Claudiu Crulic.

According to Romanian television station Pro TV, Crulic died in a Polish hospital after going on hunger strike, protesting against his arrest by authorities in Warsaw.

Crulic was arrested in Poland on October 10, 2007 and died on January 18, 2008, after Polish authorities released him from custody, putting him into a hospital, since his hunger stricken physical condition was precarious.

Diaconescu said the Romanian Embassy in Warsaw new Crulic’s situation since December 17, 2007, proof being a memo sent by the Embassy to Bucharest, where it says that the Embassy in Warsaw had no knowledge of the fact that Crulic refused to eat throughout his incarceration.

Diaconescu said the case needs an investigation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as public statements made by the Ministry.

“The acknowledgement of responsibility by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, perhaps through the resignation of minister Adrian Cioroianu, should represent natural conduct in such a situation,” Diaconescu said.
