Romanian Cable Operators Push For Law On Telecom Infrastructure

Association head Radu Petric said in a press release that the Romanian cable services industry is one of Europe's most aggressive in terms of growth rate and price strategy, adding cable operators provide television, internet and telephony services and continue to widen the range of services.

Petric stressed cable operators want a law on telecom infrastructure and a transparent and stable legal frame on the long run to back telecom investments.

According to Petric, the association, which brings together nearly 90 members, urges "the adoption of a law to regulate the access to telecom infrastructure and put an end to the abusive increase in utility pole rents."

"Cable operators call on local authorities not to turn the access to public domain into means of distorting or annihilating competition or overcharging cable operators," said Petric, adding "cable operators call for a strategy at country level to be brought in line with the local strategy and further develop high speed internet infrastructure in Romania."

The association, a professional apolitical and non-profit organization, brings together Romania's largest cable operators and aims to create a legal frame to back the Romanian telecom industry.

The members of the association cover 80% of Romania's television distribution market, hold 40% of the local fixed-line services market and also hold the biggest market share on high speed internet.

The association will organize in Bucharest, on November 10 and 11, the 14th edition of the Cable Communications Convention, Romania's sole fair of cable television and cable communications equipment.
