Romanian FM Says Allegations Of Romanian Executed In China Don’t Check Out

Romanian daily Adevarul reported Friday that 23 year-old Andrei Negrea had been arrested in China for drug dealing and had been sentenced to death. According to the paper, the Romanian was executed last week.

"Romania’s Embassy to Beijing informed today, July 31, 2009, that checkups conducted by Chinese authorities revealed that China’s Supreme Court knows nothing of the Negrea or any other case of any Romanian national sentenced to death. At the court serving the province where Andrei Negrea is supposed to be, the name does not come up, nor is there any drug dealing trial pending involving Romanians. In conclusion, I can say there is currently no certain, official, authorized information confirming media allegations,” Diaconescu said during a press conference.

The minister said the Romanian embassy to Beijing said on July 6 that based on information provided by China’s Ministry of Public Security and General Prosecutor’s Office, no Romanian had been arrested on drug dealing charges.

The minister added investigations continued and the man’s family was contacted.

"His father confirmed they spoke on the phone on July 14, when he sent his son money," the minister said.

Daily Adevarul reported the Romanian was part of an international drug dealing network and was arrested at the end of last year. The paper also said the information that the man was executed was only confirmed by Marius Cazac, head of the organized crime and terrorism department in Suceava, northeastern Romania.
