Cioroianu said he did not receive any information on the real situation of Claudiu Crulic, the Romanian citizen who died of starvation in Poland, protesting against what he claimed to be his unjust arrest.

"Since the beginning of the case, the minister did not receive any information on the real situation in the Crulic case. It is my belief that consul Preda approached the matter in an unprofessional way," said the resigning minister.

He said he resigns even if "the blame was never on the minister side."

Romanian citizen Claudiu Crulic died in a Polish hospital, after going on hunger strike, protesting against the fact that he was arrested by authorities in Warsaw.

Crulic was arrested in Poland on October 10. 2007, and died on January 18, 2008, when Polish authorities released him from custody, sending him to a hospital, since his health was precarious because of the hunger strike.
