"The decision only refers to the public servants in the central administration, not the employees in the entire public sector. It has been noted that the number of public servants in ministries has grown a great deal in the past several years, so the government decided to «rationalize» the positions in central administration," official sources said.

Romanian prime minister Emil Boc and finance minister Gheorghe Pogea recently said the sum of public administration staff spending will be gradually reduced by up to 20% compared to 2008, through the removal from budgeting of some 139,500 vacant positions from central and local public institutions existing on December 31, 2008.
