Romanian Highways To Be Subject To Toll

Transport Minister Anca Boagiu had previously said a toll would only be on the highways on Pan-European Corridor IV, as per a European Commission requirement. Draghia pointed out that tolling is a condition for European financing applicable to the entire network.

Currently, only the Bucharest-Cernavoda segment of the Bucharest-Constanta highway is on Corridor IV.

CNADNR is mulling over the toll rate as well as the way it will be charged - by using toll booths or using the EU's upcoming Galileo global navigation satellite system.

Romania's Transport Ministry on Tuesday awarded three contracts, for EUR427.5 million, for the construction of the last sections of the Orastie-Sibiu highway segment. In May, the Ministry signed contracts for sections of the Timisoara-Lugoj, Nadlac-Arad and Lugoj-Deva highway segments. All of these sections are on Corridor IV, which starts at Nuremberg and continues through Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Bucharest towards Istanbul.
