Romanian Liberals, Conservatives Approve Alliance With Social Democrats

The leadership bodies of Romania’s opposition Liberal and Conservative parties on Saturday approved with a wide majority of votes the creation of an alliance with the Social Democratic Party.

Social democrat leader Victor Ponta, present at the liberals' meeting, welcomed the outcome of the vote. Social democrats are also expected to validate the alliance on Saturday.

The Liberal Party has already teamed up the Conservative Party under the Center-Right Alliance and the new political body, including social democrats, will be called the Social-Liberal Union. The alliance will be co-headed by social democrat leader Ponta and liberal leader Antonescu.
