Romanian NGO: 56 County Council Candidates Not Morally Qualified

The list of the 56 “problematic” candidates includes 22 members of the leftist opposition Social Democratic Party (which owns majority county council seats in the country), 15 members of ruling National Liberal Party, 9 members of Democratic Liberal Party etc.

According to Alina Mungiu Pippidi, president of the Romanian Academic Society, the “Coalition for a clean ruling” monitored 150 candidates for county councils.

She said the identified problems concern integrity issues, such as conflict of interests due to the public position of a candidate, legal problems (formal incompatibility, incomplete wealth statements or even failure to publish the wealth statements), collaboration with former communist secret police Securitate, criminal investigations or convictions etc.

She mentioned nine other candidates are suspected Securitate collaborators, and that the country’s council in charge with studying Securitate currently investigates them archives CNASAS.

The list of candidates who do not meet the integrity requirements is subject to modification, based on possible new developments, Alina Mungiu Pippidi said.
